Verlander's Emotional Farewell in Detroit with Daughter on Mound

Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander received an emotional send-off Saturday, September 26, 2026, in what was likely his final Major League Baseball start. His 7-year-old daughter, Genevieve, surprised him on the mound, a moment orchestrated by his wife, Kate Upton, and Tigers manager A.J. Hinch.

Verlander, 43, made his second start of the season in his planned retirement after a hamstring issue flared up in March. Genevieve ran from the dugout to her father, who was visibly moved by the unexpected gesture. The scene unfolded as Verlander, who had no prior knowledge of the surprise, embraced his daughter, tears streaming down his face.

"I had no clue. I was totally blindsided, and it hit me like a ton of bricks," Verlander said, according to MLB.com. "That was amazing. I was sobbing and I had to tell her, just to make sure she understood, I was happy. She’s never seen me cry like that." The crowd chanted "J-V!" as he held his daughter.

Catcher Dillon Dingler also experienced the emotion. "Oh my God, I’d better not drop this," Dingler recalled thinking as he prepared to catch Verlander’s likely last pitch. He described Genevieve's appearance as "super special." After leaving the mound, Verlander hugged teammates and met Upton and their son Bellamy before departing with his family. He pitched five innings, throwing 91 pitches, in the Tigers' 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"Every time I’ve taken a ball on the mound, I give it everything I have until the manager decides to take the ball out of my hand," Verlander reflected. "I hope that if there’s one thing people remember for me, that’s it. I gave my all every single time I take the mound." He plans to spend more time with his family.
