A former television news anchor received a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 25 years on Monday for fatally stabbing her 80-year-old mother last Halloween. Angelynn "Angie" Mock, 48, pleaded guilty in late August to one count of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Anita Avers of Wichita, Kansas.
Mock will not be eligible for 15% good time credit but will receive credit for nearly a year already served, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. Mock stated she will not appeal the ruling, though she has two weeks to change her mind.
Sonja Kreutziger, Avers’ stepdaughter, told a television station that Mock "killed the one woman who loved her unconditionally." Kreutziger also noted Avers had defensive wounds, indicating she knew her daughter was responsible for the attack.
Police responded to a home in south Wichita at 7:52 a.m. CT on Oct. 31, 2025, finding Mock outside with cuts to her hands and arm. Officers discovered Avers unresponsive in her bed with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at 8:26 a.m. CT.
Records show Mock worked as a news anchor for KTVI in St. Louis from 2011 to 2015 and for KOKH in Oklahoma City from 2007 to 2011. She also held reporting positions in Montana and Minnesota, and as a sports reporter at KLKN in Lincoln, Nebraska, from November 2002 to February 2004.
A probable cause affidavit indicated Mock had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. She allegedly told authorities she killed her mother to "save herself," believing Avers was the devil.
