OSPREY, FL (December 19, 2025) The Bishop-Parker Foundation awarded a $7,500 grant to Big Waters Land Trust, formerly known as Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast, in support of the organization’s Community Outreach and Education Program. This funding supported both existing and expanded educational and experiential programming, including new and innovative offerings that increased access to nature and environmental education for differently-abled individuals and underserved youth and families.

Through inclusive, hands-on experiences, Big Waters Land Trust provided meaningful opportunities for people to explore the outdoors while building environmental literacy, strengthening community connections, and fostering a sense of belonging. The Community Outreach and Education Program was designed to address the growing disconnect between people and the natural environment in Florida, a region facing rapid development, reduced access to natural spaces, and fewer opportunities for in-person community engagement. These challenges are especially pronounced for underserved populations, including at-risk youth and individuals with differing abilities, who often encounter barriers to outdoor recreation and environmental learning. By partnering with a wide network of local organizations, including The Haven, The Lighthouse, Easterseals, Sarasota Housing Authority, Boys & Girls Club, Loveland Center, and more, Big Waters helped ensure that individuals from diverse backgrounds could engage with nature through impactful, hands-on outdoor experiences. “We are deeply grateful to the Bishop-Parker Foundation for their generous support of our mission and our community,” said Christine P. Johnson, President of Big Waters Land Trust. “This investment allowed us to bring more people outdoors to connect with nature and with one another, helping participants develop a greater appreciation for the environment and the vital role it plays in our daily lives—while enjoying shared experiences together.” Big Waters’ Youth Education Program, a key component of the Community Outreach and Education Program, connected thousands of children to nature-based learning and outdoor experiences each year. In alignment with one of its core conservation value, Access for All, the organization recently expanded programming to better serve differently-abled individuals of all ages. In addition, Big Waters offered a variety of free outings, educational events, and immersive experiences for teens, adults, families, and multi-generational audiences. AmeriCorps Construction Crew Leader Positions Available with Habitat for Humanity

Beginning in August, we will have three AmeriCorps Construction Crew Leader positions available to handle construction site supervisor responsibilities. This is a great opportunity to gain new skills and expertise, develop new relationships and give back to our community. APPLY & LEARN MORE: https://goo.gl/CJf1ig In addition to the gift of being able to actively strengthen their communities, over 80% of all AmeriCorps alumni say that the AmeriCorps program has benefited their career. Read three AmeriCorps member testimonials below. Jennifer Anderson “I have learned lessons for a lifetime and am proud to be apart of my Habitat community; helping families get safe, decent, and affordable housing.” “When I was accepted into the Habitat for Humanity future homeowner program in May 2016, I had never swung a hammer in my life. I started doing my sweat equity hours on the construction sites and fell in love. I felt such a great sense of accomplishment helping others build their houses and achieve their goals of being a homeowner. When my hours were completed a short time later, I knew my journey with habitat was far from over. I was informed about the Americorps program and instantly knew it would be the next stepping stone in my life.” Mike Russell While attending a Build-A-Thon of 10 homes in 2 weeks in Des Moines, Iowa, Mike Russell expressed his feelings about Americorps, “I feel honored to be a part of this work, and I ask you to pray for God’s blessing on the final two days of our labor here in Iowa (we have a lot to do!)” The Build-A-Thon in Des Moines, Iowa, will turn ten vacant lots on a street in the Birdland area into safe, affordable, and decent homes. The location of this project is in an area which was flooded in 1993 and 2008; the second flood ruined the homes of hundreds of families. Millions of federal and state dollars have been spent to strengthen the levy system. The first wave of workers did the framing, roof, and siding in Week One. Our group arrived last Sunday to take the baton. Interior projects including doors, kitchen cabinets, flooring, caulking and painting have been left for us. Exterior work includes digging to attach skirts, building porches and storage sheds, caulking and painting. We are working side-by-side with the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate, civic leaders and business owners, and other wonderful members of the community. Prayers are offered every morning at the site by clergy and staffers of the local affiliate blessing in Jesus’ name before the 127 AmeriCorps and the other volunteers start the day. At our orientation Sunday night, we were introduced to the ten families which will occupy the homes that are being finished this week. It was moving to hear their expressions of gratitude and hopes for the future. Their homes will be dedicated this weekend, a time for all of us who believe to give thanks to God for His grace and loving-kindness. God bless you! Theresa Bruce “Being an AmeriCorps member has given me the opportunity to do what means the most to me, to help make the world a better place.” “It has allowed me to reflect upon all the blessings that I have in my life and to want others to have all that they may want and need. I want to be remembered as someone that served Charlotte County Habitat and the future homeowners and families with a happy heart and a warm spirit. Lastly, I would do it all over again to see the smiles on the faces of the families as we dedicate their homes!” Again, for more information on how you can become involved with Charlotte County Habitat and the Americorps program, CLICK HERE.
