Storm Surge Watch Issued for Coastal Dixie: Life-Threatening Flooding Possible
A Storm Surge Watch has been issued for Coastal Dixie, including Horseshoe Beach and Suwannee, with potential life-threatening flooding of 2-4 feet above ground starting Friday morning.
Coastal Dixie residents, particularly in Horseshoe Beach and Suwannee, are advised to immediately prepare for life-threatening storm surge. The National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL issued a Storm Surge Watch today, October 7, at 2:09 PM EDT, indicating potential inundation of 2-4 feet above ground in surge-prone areas.
The primary concern is significant storm surge flooding, with a window of concern from Friday morning until Saturday morning. Damage to buildings, washed-out escape routes, major beach erosion, and strong rip currents are potential impacts. Storm surge flooding preparations should be underway, including assembling disaster supplies and knowing your evacuation route. Residents should leave if evacuation orders are issued for their area.
While winds are forecast to remain below tropical storm force (10-15 mph with gusts to 30 mph), localized flooding from 2-4 inches of rain is also possible. Heed any flood watches and warnings. The tornado threat is currently low. This alert is effective until October 7, 2026, 10:15 PM UTC.
