Life-Threatening Storm Surge, Extreme Flooding Threaten Coastal Dixie
Coastal Dixie residents in Horseshoe Beach and Suwannee face an immediate and extreme threat from life-threatening storm surge, extreme flooding, and potential tornadoes through Saturday morning; remain sheltered and heed all warnings.
Coastal Dixie residents, particularly in Horseshoe Beach and Suwannee, face an immediate and extreme threat from a Storm Surge Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL. Life-threatening storm surge inundation of 2 to 4 feet above ground is possible through Saturday morning.
Residents in surge-prone areas should remain sheltered in a safe location. Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete, with evacuees well away from flood zones. Do not venture outside.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with an additional 2-4 inches of rainfall expected, potentially higher in some areas. This extreme flooding could trigger numerous evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may overflow banks, with floodwaters entering structures and covering escape routes. Driving conditions will be very dangerous. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act could result in serious injury or loss of life.
A Tornado Watch is also in effect. Several tornadoes are possible, with a few potentially intense. Listen for warnings and be ready to shelter quickly. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safer shelter.
Wind speeds are forecast to remain below tropical storm force, with gusts up to 30 mph. For more information, visit weather.gov/tallahassee, floridadisaster.org, or dixieemergency.com.
