Storm Surge Watch Issued for Coastal Dixie: Evacuations Possible
Coastal Dixie, including Horseshoe Beach and Suwannee, is under a Storm Surge Watch with potential for 2-4 feet of life-threatening storm surge above ground from Friday morning until Saturday morning. Residents should prepare for evacuations if ordered.
A Storm Surge Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee for Coastal Dixie, effective today, October 8, 2026, at 8:01 AM EDT. This watch includes Horseshoe Beach and Suwannee, and is in effect until 4:15 PM EDT.
Life-threatening storm surge of 2-4 feet above ground is possible in surge-prone areas from Friday morning until Saturday morning. Residents in these areas should plan for significant storm surge flooding and prepare for potential evacuations. If evacuation orders are issued for your area, leave immediately to avoid being cut off from emergency services.
Potential impacts include damage to buildings near the coast, weakened or washed-out near-shore escape routes, major beach erosion, and moderate damage to marinas and docks. Minor flooding from an additional 1-3 inches of rain is also possible, with localized flooding potentially prompting a few evacuations.
Wind speeds are expected to remain below tropical storm force, with gusts up to 30 mph. No tornadoes are expected.
