Extreme Storm Surge Warning Issued for Okaloosa Coastal Areas
An Extreme Storm Surge Warning is in effect for Okaloosa Coastal areas, including Destin, Eglin AFB, and Fort Walton Beach, with immediate threats from extreme wind, life-threatening storm surge, major flooding rain, and potential tornadoes.
An Extreme Storm Surge Warning has been issued for Okaloosa Coastal areas, including Destin, Eglin AFB, and Fort Walton Beach, effective immediately until October 9 at 9:15 PM CDT. The National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL has warned of life-threatening conditions. Residents must act now to ensure their safety.
Extreme wind, equivalent to a Category 2 Hurricane, is forecast with peak winds of 90-110 mph and gusts to 105 mph, potentially exceeding 110 mph. Hurricane force winds are expected from early this evening until early Saturday morning. Last-minute efforts should focus solely on protecting life. Shelter immediately from life-threatening wind and be prepared to move to the safest place within your shelter.
Life-threatening storm surge of 6-9 feet above ground is possible through Saturday morning. All ordered evacuations should be complete, and evacuees should be in shelters well away from surge areas. Remain sheltered in a safe location; do not venture outside. Move to upper floors if necessary to escape rising water.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with an additional 3-6 inches of rain expected, potentially causing major flooding, evacuations, and rescues. A Tornado Watch is also in effect, indicating a favorable situation for several tornadoes. Stay informed of the latest tornado situation and move quickly to the safest place within your shelter if a warning is issued.
