URGENT: Life-Threatening Storm Surge, Hurricane Winds for Okaloosa Coast
A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for Okaloosa Coastal areas, including Destin, Eglin AFB, and Fort Walton Beach, with life-threatening storm surge, hurricane-force winds, major flooding, and tornadoes expected starting early Friday afternoon.
A Storm Surge Warning has been issued for Okaloosa Coastal areas, including Destin, Eglin AFB, and Fort Walton Beach, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL, effective immediately. Residents are urged to complete all remaining preparations and move to safe shelter as life-threatening conditions are imminent.
Hurricane force winds, equivalent to a Category 1 or 2 hurricane, are expected to begin early Friday afternoon and continue through Friday evening, with peak gusts up to 105 mph. Extensive damage to roofs, mobile homes, and trees is anticipated, leading to widespread power and communication outages. Roads may become impassable due to debris.
Life-threatening storm surge of 4-7 feet above ground is possible through Saturday morning, with potential for over 6 feet in surge-prone areas. Evacuation efforts should be completed immediately. Major flooding from 3-6 inches of rain is also expected, prompting a Flood Watch. Several tornadoes are possible, with some potentially intense. Residents in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safer shelter.
