Ocoee residents can recall significant rock music moments that occurred this week in history, from the passing of a legend to iconic album releases.
Tom Petty, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, died Oct. 2, 2017. The Recording Academy had honored him as MusiCares Person of the Year earlier that year. Petty's prolific songwriting left a lasting impact on music.
The Police released their fourth album, "Ghost in the Machine," on Oct. 2, 1981. The album included the popular songs "Spirits in the Material World," "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" and "Invisible Sun." The band released their second album, "Regatta de Blanc," on Oct. 2, 1979.
Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" reached number one on the charts Oct. 2, 1971. The song, from his album "Every Picture Tells a Story," also hit number one that day.
Several rock musicians born this week include Sting, bassist and singer-songwriter for The Police, born Oct. 2, 1951. Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford was born Oct. 2, 1950. Don McLean, known for "American Pie" and "Vincent," was born Oct. 2, 1945.
