Oakland Park Prepares for King Tides and Flood Resilience: Sept-Dec 2026

Oakland Park residents should prepare for unusually high tides, known as King Tides, anticipated between September and December 2026. These tides can cause localized flooding in low-lying areas and along waterways.

The city continues its proactive efforts to mitigate the impact of these seasonal events. Oakland Park uses stormwater funds to invest in long-term strategies for adapting to King Tides and rising sea levels. Over the past decade, the city has improved its stormwater infrastructure to reduce tidal flooding.

Oakland Park is conducting its second Stormwater Vulnerability Assessment, expected to be completed in late 2026. This assessment identifies areas susceptible to flooding. City staff recently completed the semi-annual inspection of all stormwater inlets and manholes, cleaning those in need of maintenance. Staff also finished annual maintenance of the stormwater pump stations and tested emergency generators to ensure smooth operation.

Specific King Tide periods for 2026 include September 24-October 15, October 22-November 12, November 22-29, and December 22-27. The city also experienced King Tides from September 8-15. Spring Tides occurred from April 17-19 and May 15-19, while Fall Tides were observed from August 11-14 and are predicted for December 5-8.

Residents in low-lying areas or along canals and waterways affected by sea levels should take precautions. Evaluate your property's readiness and prepare flood protection measures, such as sandbags or flood panels for door thresholds and garage doors. Review your flood insurance policy to understand your coverage. During a King Tide event, do not drive through flooded areas. Turn around and find an alternate route to stay safe and minimize damage to your vehicle and surrounding property.
