John Richard Sampson, Jr., known affectionately to many as “Big John,” passed away on August 19, 2026, in Menifee, California, at the age of 87. Born on February 14, 1939, in Friend, Nebraska, he lived a life marked by hard work, loyalty, good humor, and a genuine love for people. His passing is felt throughout the community, from the bustling streets of Nuevo to the quieter trails near Lake Perris.
Sampson spent 40 years working as a truck driver, a career that reflected his strong work ethic and dependable nature. He took pride in doing his job well and understood the value of perseverance, responsibility, and dedication. Over the course of those years, he traveled many miles and met many people, leaving behind a reputation for honesty and reliability, a characteristic valued by many in the close-knit towns of Riverside County.
Outside of work, Sampson enjoyed sports and singing karaoke. He was a member of the Merry Makers singing group, where his love of music and companionship found a welcome home, often heard echoing through local gathering spots.
Family was an important part of John’s life. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Suzann. He also leaves behind his three stepchildren, David, Earl, and Earlene, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He left a mark on his grandchildren showing them that love is patient and is kind. Though he was Big John to most, he was also Papa to his family.
John’s life was one of enduring character and heartfelt connection. His nickname, “Big John,” suited him well, not only because of his memorable presence, but also because of the large place he held in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be remembered with love and respect by all who were fortunate enough to share in his life, a true pillar of the Nuevo community.
