Coastal Flood Warning, High Surf, and Rip Current Threats for MD/VA Coasts

Residents and visitors in Maryland Beaches, Accomack, and Northampton counties are urged to take immediate action due to a combination of weather hazards. The National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield VA has issued a Coastal Flood Warning, a High Surf Advisory, and a Beach Hazards Statement.

A Coastal Flood Warning is in effect until 4 AM EDT Friday, September 25. One to two feet of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. This will result in an elevated threat of property damage and the closure of numerous roads. Water depths may be sufficient to threaten homes and businesses.

A High Surf Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM EDT Thursday, September 24, with large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet in the surf zone. Additionally, a Beach Hazards Statement is active through Thursday evening, indicating a high risk of rip currents.

The NWS advises taking necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions and the risk of rip currents.
