Elko County Jury Duty Phone Scam Warning

Staff Writer

Scammers Impersonate Clerk's Office Over Jury Duty

The Elko County Clerk's Office warned residents Wednesday of phone scams demanding payment for missed jury duty.

Callers claim residents skipped jury service and demand immediate payment by phone or in person at the Sheriff's Office. The Clerk's Office does not contact people by phone about missed jury duty.

The actual process begins with a formal Show Cause letter from a judge's order. The letter directs the recipient to appear before a judge, who decides whether to assess a fine. Any fine goes directly to the Clerk's Office in downtown Elko. Residents never pay over the phone or at the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office is aware of the scam. Residents with questions about jury duty should call the Clerk's Office at 775-753-4600.
