Senators Seek Information on ICE Agent Vetting After Shootings

WASHINGTON D.C. — A coalition of Democratic U.S. senators along with Maine’s Independent senator have formally requested details from Immigration and Customs Enforcement regarding its agent vetting processes. The senators also asked about the agency's policies on body-worn cameras. This inquiry follows two recent incidents where an ICE agent was involved in fatal shootings, one in Maine and another in Houston.

Senators sent a letter to ICE officials outlining their concerns. They asked the agency to provide comprehensive information about its procedures for screening and hiring new agents. The lawmakers specifically sought clarity on psychological evaluations, background checks, and any disciplinary history reviews conducted during the hiring process.

The letter additionally inquired about ICE's current stance and future plans regarding the deployment of body cameras for its agents. The senators requested details on existing policies for body camera use, data storage, and public access to footage.

This legislative action comes after the involvement of an ICE agent in the shooting deaths of two individuals. One incident occurred in Maine, and the other took place in Houston, Texas.

The senators have not publicly disclosed a specific deadline for ICE to respond to their request for information.
