A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Newton by the NWS Jackson, MS, urging residents to prepare for potential tropical storm-force winds and moderate flooding within the next 48 hours.

NEWTON, MS – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Newton, effective immediately until October 9, 2026, at 12:15 AM UTC. Residents should act now to complete preparations for potential tropical storm-force winds and moderate flooding.

A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm-force winds are possible within the area within the next 48 hours. Peak wind forecasts are 15-25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, but the NWS warns of a potential for winds between 39 to 57 mph. Prepare for limited wind damage, including to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Expect many large tree limbs to break, with some trees snapping or uprooting. Scattered power and communications outages are possible, and some roads may become impassable due to debris.

Moderate flooding rain is also a significant threat. Forecasted rainfall amounts are 1-3 inches, with locally higher totals. This could lead to moderate rainfall flooding, potentially prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may quickly swell and overflow their banks. Residents in flood-prone areas should consider protective actions and heed any flood watches and warnings. Driving conditions will become hazardous in affected areas.

Tornadoes are not expected at this time, but showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. Stay informed of the latest forecast updates from the National Weather Service.
