NEWTON, MS – A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Newton County, effective immediately as of October 9 at 3:56 PM CDT, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS. This warning is set to expire at 12:00 AM UTC on October 10, 2026.

While sustained winds are expected to remain below tropical storm force, with a peak forecast of 10-20 mph and gusts up to 45 mph, residents should prepare for moderate flooding from heavy rain. An additional 1 inch of rainfall is expected, posing a significant threat for moderate flooding. Emergency plans should account for potential evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings, as failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and small streams may become swollen, and floodwaters could enter structures in vulnerable areas. Driving conditions may become hazardous, leading to road closures.

The NWS reports that the tornado threat is currently unfavorable, and tornadoes are not expected. However, showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. Residents should listen for any instructions from local officials and ensure emergency readiness should the forecast change. Community officials are currently assessing realized wind impacts, with little to no additional wind impacts expected.
