FBI Shifts Resources Amid Focus on Violent Crime, Immigration

Why it matters locally: Texas, as a border state, is likely to experience increased federal presence and enforcement activity as the FBI reallocates resources towards immigration enforcement. This shift could impact local law enforcement agencies and communities along the Texas border.

WASHINGTON – The Federal Bureau of Investigation has adjusted its resource allocation, directing personnel toward efforts against violent crime and immigration enforcement. This shift has resulted in staffing changes within other FBI divisions, including counterintelligence operations. FBI Director Kash Patel testified before a Senate Judiciary Committee in September 2026. Official reports indicate that the agency's leadership, including Director Patel, has prioritized these specific areas. The reallocation of personnel affects various divisions within the FBI. Officials acknowledge that this reprioritization leads to other areas operating with reduced staff. The agency has not specified the exact number of personnel reallocated or the precise impact on individual divisions.
