A Red Flag Warning has been issued for portions of Southeast Texas and Central and Southwest Louisiana, effective from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM CDT on Friday, October 9th. Residents are strongly advised to avoid all outdoor burning during this period due to critical fire weather conditions.

The warning, issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Lake Charles, LA, affects Fire Weather Zones in Vernon, Rapides, Avoyelles, Beauregard, Allen, Evangeline parishes in Louisiana, and Northern Jasper, Northern Newton, Southern Jasper, and Southern Newton counties in Texas.

Conditions contributing to this severe warning include northeast winds of 5 to 10 mph, relative humidity as low as 31 percent, and temperatures reaching up to 91 degrees. These factors create an environment where any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly. A Red Flag Warning signifies that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will shortly, driven by strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures, which can lead to extreme fire behavior.

The NWS stresses that outdoor burning is not recommended. This warning is in effect until 7:00 PM CDT on Friday, October 9th.
