New Smyrna Beach Trash Contract Negotiation June 22
New Smyrna Beach city staff will negotiate a solid waste collection contract with FCC Environmental Services on Monday, June 22, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the James W. Hathaway Commission Chambers, 214 Sams Ave.
The City Commission voted March 26 to award FCC Environmental a 10-year exclusive contract beginning October 1. The agreement provides every customer a free 96-gallon toter and maintains two weekly household waste pickups and one yard waste pickup day.
Recycling will shift to voluntary drop-off at three locations. City commissioners cited weak market demand for recyclable commodities and noted that nearly half of curbside materials arrive too contaminated to process, requiring landfill disposal at added cost.
Volusia County Fire Rescue Station 21, 4840 S. Atlantic Ave., accepts plastic, glass bottles and jars, aluminum and steel cans, mixed paper, and cardboard. Southard's Recycling, 1290 Turnbull Bay Rd., takes aluminum, paper, cardboard, plastics numbered 1-7, food-grade glass, and paperback books. Tomoka Landfill, 1990 Tomoka Farms Rd. in Port Orange, also accepts recyclables.
