Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover counties are under a High Rip Current Risk until 8:00 PM EDT today, October 11. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wilmington, NC, issued this warning, emphasizing that dangerous rip currents are expected. Swimmers are advised to exercise extreme caution.

In addition to the rip current threat, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 10:00 AM EDT this morning, October 11. This advisory warns of up to one-half foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Minor coastal flooding may impact low-lying roads and locations along the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent tidal creeks.

For those in affected coastal areas, the NWS advises checking with local officials for any road closures or impacts due to flooding. If travel is necessary, allow extra time, and do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Property owners in flood-prone areas should take necessary protective actions.

Regarding the High Rip Current Risk, the NWS urges swimmers to swim near a lifeguard if possible. If caught in a rip current, remain calm and float. Do not attempt to swim directly against the current. Instead, if able, swim parallel to the shoreline. If escape is not possible, face the shore and signal for help by calling or waving.
