Dangerous Rip Currents Expected for Coastal Pender, New Hanover

Coastal residents and visitors in Pender and New Hanover Counties should exercise extreme caution due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service Wilmington NC. Dangerous rip currents are expected from 6 AM EDT Thursday, September 24, through Thursday evening. A strong north to south longshore current is also anticipated.

Rip currents pose a significant threat, capable of sweeping even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. The National Weather Service advises that if caught in a rip current, individuals should relax and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim in a direction parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Whenever possible, swim near a lifeguard.

This Rip Current Statement is effective from Thursday, September 24, at 6 AM EDT and expires Thursday evening, September 24. Residents in Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover Counties should be aware of these hazardous conditions.
