A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for Coastal New Hanover County until 8:00 PM EDT today, October 7, 2026, due to strong longshore currents and a moderate risk of rip currents. Caution is advised; check with lifeguards before entering the water.
Coastal New Hanover County residents and visitors are advised to use caution in or near the water today, Wednesday, October 7, 2026, due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service Wilmington NC. The statement is effective immediately and remains in effect until 8:00 PM EDT tonight.
A strong north to south longshore current is expected. There is also a Moderate Risk of rip currents. Longshore currents can sweep swimmers and surfers into rip currents, piers, jetties, and other hazardous areas. These currents may also sweep swimmers off their feet, making it difficult to return to shore.
The affected area is specifically Coastal New Hanover County. Before entering the ocean, check with lifeguards regarding possible hazards you may be swept into. Caution is advised for all individuals in or near the water.
