Rip Current Statement Issued for Coastal Pender, New Hanover Until 8 PM

A Rip Current Statement is in effect for Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover Counties until 8:00 PM EDT today, September 26, warning of dangerous rip currents that can sweep swimmers into deeper water.

Coastal residents and visitors in Pender and New Hanover Counties are advised to exercise extreme caution today, September 26, due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service Wilmington NC. This statement is effective immediately, from 10:46 AM EDT, and remains in effect until 8:00 PM EDT tonight.

Dangerous rip currents are expected along the coasts of Pender and New Hanover Counties. The National Weather Service warns that rip currents can carry even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

To ensure safety, the NWS advises swimming only near a lifeguard. If you are caught in a rip current, the primary instruction is to relax and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline. If you are unable to escape the current, face the shore and call or wave for help.
