FEMA Farmington River Flood Maps Update | Avon, CT

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will host an open house Tuesday, Sept. 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Avon Public Library, 281 Country Club Road, to present revised flood maps for the Farmington River watershed in Hartford County.

The free event allows residents to review updated flood zone designations and ask questions of FEMA and state staff. Property owners throughout the watershed—including Simsbury, Canton, and surrounding towns—should attend if flood zone changes could affect their properties. The revised maps take effect Nov. 13.

FEMA began updating the maps in 2018 using new topographic data, stream flow measurements, and development patterns. The new maps replace versions dating back decades in some cases.

Flood zone changes can trigger new federal flood insurance requirements for properties with mortgages from federally regulated lenders. Owners removed from flood zones may reduce or eliminate flood insurance costs.

No registration is required. Residents unable to attend can review preliminary maps at FEMA's Flood Map Service Center website or contact their town's land use office.
