Residents in the Salt Lake Valley, Wasatch Back, and Wasatch Mountains are advised to monitor weather conditions closely as a strong thunderstorm moves through the area. The National Weather Service (NWS) Salt Lake City issued a Special Weather Statement today, October 10, at 3:15 PM MDT, effective until 3:45 PM MDT.

At 3:15 PM MDT, radar indicated a strong thunderstorm over Holladay, approximately 5 miles east of Murray, moving northeast at 20 mph. This storm is producing wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph and pea-sized hail. Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is possible.

Locations impacted include Salt Lake City, Murray, Taylorsville, Cottonwood Heights, Holladay, South Salt Lake, and parts of the Wasatch Mountains. This alert also covers Interstate 80 in Utah between mile markers 124 and 143, and Interstate 15 between mile markers 300 and 303.

Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek safe shelter inside a building or vehicle immediately. Torrential rainfall is also occurring and may lead to flash flooding; do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
