A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of central North Carolina, effective immediately until 3:30 PM EDT today, October 11.

The National Weather Service in Raleigh warns residents in southeastern Warren County, Nash County, northwestern Edgecombe County, Halifax County, and eastern Franklin County to prepare for severe weather. At 2:10 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was detected 8 miles west of Nashville, moving northeast at 30 mph. This storm is capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts, which may cause damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Communities in the warning area include Rocky Mount, Roanoke Rapids, Nashville, Halifax, Dortches, Littleton, Red Oak, Enfield, Weldon, and Spring Hope. Interstate 95 between Mile Markers 173 and 132 is also affected.

Residents should move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building for protection. Remain alert for the possibility of a tornado. If a tornado is spotted, go at once to a basement or a small, central room in a sturdy structure. A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 5:00 PM EDT for central North Carolina.
