Coastal Flood Warning, High Surf & Rip Current Risk for Eastern Currituck

Residents and visitors in Eastern Currituck County should take immediate action to protect flood-prone property as a Coastal Flood Warning is in effect until Friday, September 25, 2026, at 4 AM EDT. The National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield VA has issued this warning, along with a High Surf Advisory and a Beach Hazards Statement.

A High Surf Advisory is in effect until Thursday, September 24, 2026, at 6 PM EDT, bringing large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet. A Beach Hazards Statement, indicating a high risk of rip currents, is in effect through Thursday evening, September 24, 2026.

Widespread flooding is expected, with two to three feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. This depth is sufficient to close numerous roads and threaten homes and businesses. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.

Inexperienced swimmers must remain out of the water due to dangerous surf and hazardous swimming conditions. The NWS advises remaining out of the water.
