Mount Vernon is remembering Clara Wood, a long-time resident and active community member, who passed away on July 17, 2026. She was 99 years old.

Mrs. Wood, born Clara Rindal on April 3, 1927, in Conway, WA, was a first-generation American whose parents, Pedor and Oline Rindal, immigrated from Norway. She graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1945. Her career began at JC Penny before she transitioned into banking.

Clara married Jack Kruger in the late 1940s, and together they raised three children: Craig, Lori, and Lisa. Jack Kruger passed away in 1994. Later in life, Clara married Len Wood, and the couple enjoyed traveling. After retirement, they became "snowbirds," splitting their time between Palm Springs and Mount Vernon.

Mrs. Wood was known for her many talents and hobbies, including her skills as a gifted seamstress. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and painting. Her passions also extended to gardening and baking, where she was always eager to try new recipes. Those who knew her often remarked on her constant smile.

Her Norwegian heritage was a source of great pride for Clara, who spoke Norwegian fluently. She had the opportunity to visit Norway and enjoyed sharing her cultural background with others. Above all, Clara found her greatest happiness in spending time with her family and friends.

Clara Wood was preceded in death by both her first husband, Jack Kruger, and her second husband, Len Wood. She is survived by her children Craig (Nancy) Kruger, Lori (Greg) Hall, and Lisa (Bob) Wood, along with her three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A Celebration of Life will take place at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon on Saturday, September 26th, at 11:00 AM. A reception will follow the service. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be considered for Hospice of the NW.
