Blowing Dust Advisory Issued for Palouse, Spokane Area; Visibility Reduced
A Blowing Dust Advisory has been issued for the Washington Palouse, Upper Columbia Basin, Spokane Area, and Waterville Plateau, effective through Friday evening, with hazardous driving conditions expected due to reduced visibility.
Residents in the Washington Palouse, Upper Columbia Basin, Spokane Area, and Waterville Plateau should prepare for reduced visibility due to a Blowing Dust Advisory. The National Weather Service (NWS) Spokane has issued this advisory, effective from 1:33 PM PDT on Thursday, October 8, until 7:00 PM PDT on Friday, October 9.
Patchy to localized areas of blowing dust are expected, potentially dropping visibility to between one-quarter and one mile at times. Southwest to west winds are forecast at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph. Hazardous driving conditions are anticipated.
Areas specifically affected include Coulee City, Davenport, Oakesdale, Rockford, Airway Heights, Odessa, Wilbur, Harrington, Colfax, Cheney, Pullman, Waterville, Fairfield, Downtown Spokane, Ritzville, Uniontown, Spokane Valley, Rosalia, Mansfield, Tekoa, Badger Mountain Road, Grand Coulee, Creston, and La Crosse. The NWS indicates the strongest winds and highest potential for blowing dust are expected along US-2 between Waterville and Airway Heights, and on I-90 from Ritzville to Spokane.
Drivers are advised to be ready for a sudden drop in visibility. If blowing dust or sand is encountered or seen approaching, pull off the road as far as possible, put the vehicle in park, turn off all lights, and keep your foot off the brake pedal.
