Strong Thunderstorm Warning for Middle Rio Grande Valley, 50 MPH Winds Possible

Residents in the Middle Rio Grande Valley, including the Albuquerque Metro Area and Lower Rio Grande Valley, should monitor weather conditions closely due to a strong thunderstorm moving through the area. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Albuquerque has issued a Special Weather Statement, effective immediately and expiring at 6:45 PM MDT tonight, September 19, 2026.

At 6:15 PM MDT, radar indicated a strong thunderstorm near Bernardo, approximately 19 miles south of Belen, moving east at 15 mph. This storm is capable of producing wind gusts up to 50 mph and penny-sized hail. Gusty winds could dislodge tree limbs and unsecured outdoor objects, and minor damage to outdoor items is possible.

Areas potentially impacted include Bernardo, Veguita, La Joya, Abeytas, Las Nutrias, Sabinal, and Contreras. This also affects Highway 60 between Mile Markers 166 and 179, and Interstate 25 between Mile Markers 168 and 184.

The NWS advises monitoring the weather situation and being alert for threatening conditions. Secure any loose outdoor items to prevent potential damage.
