U.S. Halts Avocado Inspections in Michoacán Amid Security Concerns

Why it matters locally: While the immediate impact on avocado supply and prices nationwide is unclear, consumers in North Carolina may experience fluctuations depending on how long the suspension of inspections continues and how it affects the broader U.S. market for imported avocados.

Mexican authorities deployed 1,500 additional troops to Michoacán on Thursday, following the United States' decision to suspend government operations in the region. The suspension included halting avocado inspections necessary for export to the U.S. market. The U.S. announced the halt after receiving a non-specific threat to U.S. interests in the area. The measure effectively stopped avocado exports from Michoacán, a primary source of the fruit for the United States. The Mexican military's deployment aims to enhance security in the western state. Michoacán has experienced ongoing security challenges. U.S. agricultural inspectors conduct the certification process in Mexico. They ensure avocados meet phytosanitary requirements before shipment to the United States. The immediate impact of the suspension on avocado supply or prices remains unclear. Authorities have not specified when inspection activities might resume.
