FBI Shifts Resources Amid Focus on Violent Crime, Immigration

Why it matters locally: The FBI's reallocation of resources towards violent crime and immigration enforcement could impact operations and investigative priorities for law enforcement agencies across North Carolina, including the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center, who often collaborate with federal agencies on these matters.

WASHINGTON – The Federal Bureau of Investigation has adjusted its resource allocation, directing personnel toward efforts against violent crime and immigration enforcement. This shift has resulted in staffing changes within other FBI divisions, including counterintelligence operations. FBI Director Kash Patel testified before a Senate Judiciary Committee in September 2026. Official reports indicate that the agency's leadership, including Director Patel, has prioritized these specific areas. The reallocation of personnel affects various divisions within the FBI. Officials acknowledge that this reprioritization leads to other areas operating with reduced staff. The agency has not specified the exact number of personnel reallocated or the precise impact on individual divisions.
