Cooke Elementary bids farewell to Firefighter Wayne VanderMeulen

Students and staff at George L. Cooke Elementary lined the sidewalks Wednesday to cheer Firefighter Wayne VanderMeulen as he left the building for the last time as an active firefighter.

VanderMeulen retires after 20 years with the fire department. His wife, Jessica VanderMeulen, teaches at the school, where he became a regular presence. He visited classrooms, led assemblies, and taught students about fire safety and community helpers.

The kindergarten team organized the send-off, with multiple classes gathering outside to wave and cheer as VanderMeulen exited the grounds.
