Fayette County Fire Department Wins State Blood Transfusion Award

Staff Writer
June 11, 2026

Fayette County's Fire and Emergency Services Department won a 2026 Georgia County Excellence Award for its Pre-Hospital Blood Transfusion Program, one of six counties honored at the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia Annual Conference in Savannah on May 1.

The program lets paramedics administer blood and blood products to trauma patients and those with severe bleeding during transport to hospitals. Fire Chief Jeffrey Hill said the capability saves lives. "Administering blood and blood products for trauma and other medical bleeding conditions while transporting to the trauma center equates to lives saved," Hill said. "This is the gold standard for trauma resuscitation and medical bleeding emergencies in the pre-hospital environment."

Paramedics use balanced blood products in the field to stabilize patients experiencing severe hemorrhage or traumatic shock before hospital arrival, following modern trauma care protocols. The program will be featured in the June 2026 issue of Georgia Trend magazine, which sponsors the awards alongside the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia to recognize innovative county programs.
