Monroe County residents, including Homewood and Monroeville, must prepare for tropical storm-force winds and significant rainfall. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Mobile, AL, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch effective October 7 at 4:03 PM CDT.

This watch means tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours. Peak winds of 35-45 mph with gusts up to 55 mph are expected from Friday evening until early Saturday morning. There is a potential for wind speeds of 58 to 73 mph.

Residents should prepare for significant wind damage, including potential damage to roofing, siding, porches, and sheds. Mobile homes are particularly vulnerable if unanchored. Expect several large trees to be snapped or uprooted, and some roads may become impassable due to debris. Scattered power and communication outages are likely.

Moderate flooding rain is also anticipated, with 3-6 inches of rainfall, and locally higher amounts possible. Emergency plans should account for potential evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and localized flooding in low-lying areas and underpasses is expected, making driving hazardous.

Efforts to protect life and property should begin immediately. Complete all preparations before winds become hazardous. Heed any flood watches and warnings. Tornadoes are not expected at this time, but showers and gusty winds may still occur.
