A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Monroe County, including Homewood and Monroeville, effective immediately. The National Weather Service in Mobile, AL, warns residents to expect tropical storm-force winds, peaking between 40-50 mph with gusts up to 60 mph, from Friday evening until early Saturday morning. Wind conditions could reach 58 to 73 mph in some areas.
All remaining efforts to protect life and property should be completed as soon as possible. Residents are advised to move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin. Significant damage to roofing, siding, porches, awnings, carports, and sheds is possible. Mobile homes, especially unanchored ones, may be damaged. Unsecured lightweight objects could become dangerous projectiles. Expect several large trees to be snapped or uprooted, potentially causing impassable roads due to debris. Scattered power and communications outages are also anticipated.
Moderate rainfall of 2-4 inches, with locally higher amounts, is also forecast, potentially leading to moderate flooding. Emergency plans should include the possibility of evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and tributaries may quickly become swollen, and floodwaters could enter structures. Driving conditions will become hazardous.
A few tornadoes are also possible. If your shelter is vulnerable, prepare to relocate. If a tornado warning is issued, shelter quickly.
