Life-Threatening Storm Surge and Winds Impact Mobile Coastal Areas

A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for Mobile Coastal areas with life-threatening surge and dangerous winds, requiring residents to shelter immediately.

Staff Writer
10/09/2026 · Satsuma edition

A Storm Surge Warning has been issued for Mobile Coastal areas, including Grand Bay, Dauphin Island, and Bayou La Batre, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL, effective immediately as of October 9 at 6:53 AM CDT. Residents in these areas should be sheltered in a safe location and avoid venturing outside.

Life-threatening storm surge of 3-5 feet above ground is possible through Saturday morning. Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete. Evacuees must be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. Dangerous winds of 35-45 mph with gusts up to 75 mph are expected from early this afternoon until early Saturday morning. Last-minute efforts to protect life and property should now be complete. The area remains subject to significant wind damage.

A Flood Watch remains in effect, with an additional 1-3 inches of rainfall expected, potentially leading to major flooding. Emergency plans should include the potential for major flooding, and evacuations and rescues are likely. Heed all flood watches and warnings.
