URGENT: Storm Surge Warning Issued for Mobile Coastal Area

A Storm Surge Warning has been issued for Mobile Coastal, including Grand Bay, Dauphin Island, and Bayou La Batre, with life-threatening storm surge and hazardous winds expected through Saturday morning.

A Storm Surge Warning has been issued for the Mobile Coastal area, including Grand Bay, Dauphin Island, and Bayou La Batre, effective immediately as of October 9 at 9:49 PM CDT. Residents in these areas are advised to shelter in a safe location and not venture outside as life-threatening storm surge impacts are unfolding and will continue through Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL reports a potential for 2-4 feet of storm surge inundation above ground in surge-prone areas. All flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete, and evacuees should be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. The wind threat includes potential for winds of 39 to 57 mph, with peak gusts up to 50 mph. Last-minute efforts to protect property should now be complete. The NWS indicates that impacts from both wind and storm surge are currently unfolding.

No additional significant rainfall is forecast, and the threat of flooding rain has decreased. Tornadoes are not expected, though showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. This warning expires on October 10 at 6:00 AM UTC.

For evacuation and shelter information, contact Mobile County EMA at 251-460-8000 or visit mobilecountyema.gov. For storm surge threat graphics and other storm impacts, visit www.weather.gov/mob.
