Milton businesses and residents seeking permits and inspections for construction, renovations or yard waste burning can find guidance from the City of Milton Fire Department and Planning Department. These departments oversee processes to ensure safety and compliance with local and state regulations.

New businesses must receive inspection from the City of Milton Fire Department before obtaining a City of Milton Occupational License. The department enforces the Florida Fire Prevention Code. Businesses start this process by submitting an Occupational License Application to the Planning Department at City Hall, 6738 Dixon Street.

When new businesses occupy existing buildings, common issues arise. A change of occupancy under the code requires evaluation as a new occupancy and review by the Santa Rosa County Building Department. Converting a former single-family residence to commercial space, for example, involves specific considerations.

For new construction, renovations, alterations, modifications or changes of occupancy, plans require a Life Safety Review by the Fire Department. This review is a prerequisite for a building permit. Submit all plans and a completed Application for Development Approval to the city's Planning Department. Plans for Life Safety Review must meet Commercial Development Approval requirements.

The City of Milton Fire Department reviews, permits and inspects all commercial fire alarm, fire suppression and automatic fire sprinkler systems within city limits. State-licensed system contractors submit two sets of system permit drawings and an Application for Fire Prevention Permit to the City of Milton Planning Department at City Hall. Permit fees are available online.

Residents needing to burn residential yard trash must obtain a burn permit from the City of Milton Fire Department. Permits are issued only for yard trash generated on the property, provided all conditions are met. Fire Department personnel inspect the site before issuing a permit, which is valid for one day only. Residents can view the Burn Permit Application online.

Residents and business owners can access permit applications and detailed requirements through the City of Milton's Planning Department at City Hall, 6738 Dixon Street.
