The local school district introduced a new mobile device policy, effective today, September 29, 2026, aiming to minimize distractions and improve the learning environment for students across all grade levels. This comprehensive policy defines mobile devices broadly, encompassing everything from cell phones and tablets to smartwatches and portable gaming consoles.
The new regulations address the appropriate use of wireless communication devices during the instructional day. While possessing a device does not violate the Code of Student Conduct, inappropriate use that disrupts education is now explicitly prohibited. The policy outlines specific rules tailored to different age groups, recognizing the varying needs of younger and older students.
For K-5 students, the policy prohibits access to cell phones from arrival through the instructional day. Students may only display and use these devices after dismissal. Additionally, the use of headphones and earbuds is not permitted during instructional hours for these younger learners. This measure aims to create a focused classroom setting, free from common digital distractions.
Students in grades 6-12 face structured device use rules. They cannot use wireless communication devices during class, in bathrooms, or during any instructional activity. Upon entering each classroom, students must place their cell phones in a designated station. They can only retrieve their phones upon dismissal or with an instructor's permission for instructional purposes. All students using electronic devices for learning must also comply with School Board Policy 7540.03, titled 'Student Responsible Use of Technology, Social Media, and District Network Systems & Internet Safety'.
