ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — An Albuquerque family has been going through what can only be described as a nightmare living situation in the International District. “I was just kind of like, ‘Oh my God, why are there mushrooms in my bathroom?'” Jennifer Godin said. Godin has only lived in Madeira Flats on 1100 Madeira Dr. SE for about six months after moving from Las Cruces. “Since the middle of, I would say probably July, we’ve been having sinks backing up from the upstairs neighbors,” she said. “[Then] it turned into sinks overflowing.” Then Godin said she noticed black mold and other little spots. Mushrooms ‘pop’ up “I saw fungal growth that turned out to be mushrooms,” she said. Godin said they basically popped up overnight. At first, she thought the spores were bugs. But when she realized what it was, she told her landlord and said maintenance wasn’t very helpful. “Maintenance kind of made a joke and ribbed me a little bit about them not being big enough mushrooms,” she continued. “He was like, ‘Well, you made it look bigger. You zoomed in on the picture,’ and I was like, ‘OK, the fact that there’s mushrooms at all in my ceiling is a problem. It doesn’t matter what size they are. I’m not feeding them to you.'” Godin lives in the apartment with her 14-year-old son. She says for weeks, they were living, showering and eating in those conditions. “Maybe they just didn’t care because it’s not them that’s having to live in it, you know? But my son and I are there, and he’s homeschooled, so he’s been in that environment, breathing whatever in this whole time,” said Godin. Less an apartment and more of construction zone Godin was told a water main break directly below her apartment caused the issue. Crews dug up a first hole in her son’s bedroom, then a hole near the bathroom. “It’s been like an active construction zone for a month and a half,” she continued. “They snaked the drains again, came back out, jackhammered another hole into the floor in the apartment. We’ve been parkouring into the bathroom for I would say probably like three weeks now.” The bathroom is also the only one in her apartment, so she and her son had to use that until property management offered up a different bathroom. Godin said she didn’t feel safe letting her son use that one while she wasn’t home. Crews cut out the black mold and mushrooms. But Godin says she, her son and pets were living in those conditions for weeks. “[My son’s] feeling a little bit like sluggish, little cold symptoms. I’m diabetic. I have high blood pressure, so this isn’t like the greatest for me to begin with,” she continued. “[The animals] were playing in the dirt, and my dog was wanting to take off with rocks and chew on the dirt, and she’s getting rashes and stuff now.” A new unit brings new problems Finally, Godin and her son were able to move to a different unit Tuesday, but the saga hasn’t ended. “Our drain is not draining at all. So, if you take a shower, you end up with water at your calves. I can’t wash my hair in there. I’ve had to wash my hair in the sink, and the door is off the hinges and that’s been like that since we moved in,” Godin said. Because Godin moved from Las Cruces, she said she wasn’t familiar with the area. Now, she feels like property management may have taken advantage of that. “They have other properties that they manage as well, so [the landlord] could have offered me a different location or been like, ‘Hey, you know, this isn’t the best area. I know you’re a single mom. Maybe look somewhere else.’ I just kind of feel like I got taken for a ride,” Godin said. Godin said she wanted to share her story so others can be aware that there is help available. “I wanted to make sure nobody else was going through this, or if they are, that they know they can get help, that people will actually listen. And I know it’s probably not just me that has had this problem,” she said. As the issues seem to never end, Godin said she’s trying to be hopeful. “All I can do is just stay positive. I don’t want to, you know, fall apart. I’m the one that has to carry everything, so I can’t really,” she said. City code enforcement now involved Godin reported the flooding to 311. KOB 4 reached out to the City of Albuquerque to see if any other violations from the property have been reported. Right now, the property is not on CABQ’s Lazy Landlord list. Thursday, a code enforcement worker came out and spoke to Godin. “Code Enforcement has received only one complaint about the Madeira Flats, located at 1100 Madeira Dr. SE, on Aug. 27, 2026, for a slow-draining shower. Code Enforcement has been in contact with the tenant and management about this issue. Code Enforcement has been unable to coordinate an inspection because the tenant has not been available to provide access, but we will continue to work with the tenant and management on a long-term resolution,” CABQ Planning spokesperson Tim Walsh said. KOB 4 reached out to Madeira Flats Thursday, but management has not responded by the time of publication.
