Service & Justice

Service & Justice Ministry & Community Outreach Days of Service Throughout the academic year, BarryU comes together for a day of service and reflection with our community partners across South Florida. This tradition brings together student clubs, residence halls, friends, athletic teams, and more to serve in our local community. Days of Service hours also fulfill your service-learning requirement for classes. Look out for dates for each Day of Service and contact Ahjané Billingsley at [email protected] to get involved or learn more. Faculty are also encouraged to participate in Days of Service. We organize: September: Peace Week Day of Service October: Day of Service November: FLASH Day of Service January: Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service April: Sustainability Saturday - Earth Week Day of Service Peer Advocates & Campus Democracy Project A key segment of justice work is civic engagement and advocacy. You can get involved as a student leader with our university-wide Campus Democracy Project - which promotes nonpartisan civic engagement and issue advocacy/mobilization rooted in Catholic Social Teaching. The Catholic Social Tradition states that “responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation.” Barry University is proud to be an ALL IN Campus committed to democratic engagement as well as a host for NETWORK Advocates, a non-profit founded by Adrian Dominican Sister Carol Coston, devoted to advocacy and voter education through trainings, webinars, and other resources central to the mission of advancing the common good. Students who work closely with the CDP and Peer Advocates can apply to a paid fellowship with either partner: ALL IN Lead Fellowship Sister Carol Coston Fellowship Faith Justice Fellows True to the Adrian Dominican charism and inspired by BarryU’s core commitments, student servant-leaders apply to the Faith Justice Fellows to engage with some of the world’s deepest needs, right in our own neighborhood of Miami. Informed by rich Catholic Social Teaching, Fellows work to accompany and address immediate needs (service) and root causes (justice) in the community. Faith Justice Fellows participate in faith formation and leadership development through the lens of service and justice over the course of the academic year. Each member is matched with a local community partner and begins service in the Fall Semester. For one year, fellows commit to approximately nine hours per week at their sites, participate in weekly group reflection, and commit to the values of spirituality, solidarity, service, and social justice. Students are compensated with a generous stipend, can attend faith-inspired justice and advocacy conferences across the country, may be eligible for experiential-learning credits, and present their community work/research at the end of the year. Wondering if you should apply? If you are an undergraduate student: Who is interested in faith and social justice; Who is passionate about Catholic Social Teaching; Who wants to develop and strengthen leadership skills; Who works hard to honor commitments; Who can dedicate 10 hours a week to all of the above; Then this program is for you. Connect with Ahjané Billingsley at [email protected], or visit us in Thompson 211 to learn more. Applications open in January. GivePulse and Other Collaborative Service Opportunities Other opportunities for both direct and indirect service may be found via GivePulse, our community engagement portal. Please log in with your Barry username and password. These opportunities may be eligible for experiential learning credits!
