UCSF Medical School Accused of Racial Discrimination in Admissions

The U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division found that the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine discriminated based on race in its admissions process for the incoming classes of 2023 through 2025. The department announced its findings on September 23, 2026.

The investigation concluded that UCSF Medical School granted and denied admission based on race, a practice that violates Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Supreme Court's 2023 ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard. This ruling prohibited race-based admissions in higher education.

The Justice Department's determination means UCSF Medical School's admissions procedures violated federal civil rights law.
