Trumpeter Sings Anthem After Instrument Fails at Diamondbacks Game

Miami Gardens musician Jessie McGuire, 68, demonstrated quick thinking Saturday night when his trumpet malfunctioned during a ceremony at Chase Field honoring the Arizona Diamondbacks' 2001 World Series championship. As McGuire began playing "The Star-Spangled Banner," his instrument failed. He seamlessly transitioned to singing the anthem a cappella for the sold-out crowd.

McGuire's vocal performance earned him a standing ovation, and Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo congratulated him afterward. McGuire, who previously served as lead trumpeter for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and played for three U.S. presidents, was awarded a World Series ring by the organization for his contribution to the 2001 victory.

He also returned for the seventh-inning stretch, singing "God Bless America." The Diamondbacks defeated the Yankees 5-3 in the game.
