A frightening incident unfolded on the baseball field last Thursday night when New York Mets first baseman Jared Young was taken off the diamond on a stretcher during a game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field.
The collision, which occurred in the sixth inning, involved Mets pitcher Nolan McLean inadvertently kneeing Young in the head. Both players were attempting to cover first base after Justin Crawford hit a slow ball toward the bag. Young remained on the ground for approximately five minutes as paramedics worked to immobilize his neck and place him on a stretcher.
As paramedics removed Young from the field, he gave a thumbs-up to the crowd, indicating he was conscious. Shortstop Francisco Lindor described the scene as "scary," noting Young "was just somewhere else" in that moment. Interim manager Andy Green called the situation "terrifying."
Young showed concussion symptoms last Thursday night while hospitalized. An earlier CT scan, however, came back negative. The Mets ultimately lost the game to the Phillies with a final score of 3-0.
The community awaits further updates on Young's condition and his potential return to the field.
