Federal immigration authorities arrested dozens of individuals in Danbury, Connecticut, this week, despite intense opposition from elected officials and protesters. These operations highlight how the Trump administration’s mass deportation campaign continues even in Democratic-led states with laws designed to limit Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) power.
The operations, which began Monday, impacted at least 40 families and resulted in over 50 arrests by Wednesday evening. Local officials and advocates report ICE officers detained people in various public and residential areas, including outside apartment buildings, during traffic stops, in parks, near an elementary school, and outside a daycare center. Clementina Lunar, an advocate with Danbury Unites for Immigrants, stated that one father was detained shortly after walking his child to a bus stop. Lunar described the operations as "terrorizing the town," noting that many mothers with infants and school-aged children had their primary earners taken.
Nationwide, ICE arrests significantly increased in June and July. This trend continues despite local efforts in states like Connecticut to push back against federal immigration enforcement. Nearly one-third of Danbury's 90,000 residents are immigrants, making the community particularly vulnerable to these actions.
The ongoing operations create fear and separation within the immigrant community. Advocacy groups continue to monitor the situation and provide support to affected families.
