New E-Bike Safety Rules in Effect
E-bikes and other motorized wheeled devices, including motorized bicycles, scooters and skateboards, are increasingly common in Stanton. With more riders in the community, knowing the rules is essential for public safety. Ordinance No. 1165, which sets local requirements for these devices, takes effect November 28. These rules complement California’s existing three-class e-bike laws that include specific speed limits and age requirements.
Below is an overview of what riders, drivers and pedestrians need to know. KNOW WHERE YOU CAN RIDE E-bikes are welcome in Stanton, but not everywhere. Riders must use bike lanes, streets and designated shared-use paths. One of the most important reminders: e-bikes and other motorized vehicles are not permitted on City park property. Individuals using a self-propelled wheelchair or other mobility device are exempt if a physical disability prevents them from moving as a pedestrian. This aligns with Stanton’s long-standing rules that keep walking paths, playgrounds and open spaces for pedestrians and other recreational activities. Other prohibited areas include any unpaved hiking, equestrian or walking trails. Operating upon any public draining facility, ditch or channel is also prohibited. USING E-BIKES SAFELY Riders should use the same awareness, responsibility and respect for others expected when driving: Obey signs and signals Yield to pedestrians Ride in the same direction as traffic Adjust speed in residential and school zones Even small choices, like slowing down near crosswalks or signaling turns early, make a noticeable difference in helping everyone stay safe. PROHIBITED OR UNSAFE E-BIKE BEHAVIORS To keep the community safe, the following actions are not allowed when operating an e-bike in Stanton: Riding inside parks on any park pathway Performing acrobatic tricks or stunts, including “wheelies,” on any public right of way Exceeding speed limits or riding too fast for conditions Intentionally swerving or riding around stopped or slowed traffic or making unpredictable movements Carrying passengers on bikes not designed for multiple riders Holding or operating a handheld cellphone or communication device Riding at night without proper lights or reflectors Not obeying posted signs, signals or failing to yield to pedestrian right-of-way Operating an e-bike while impaired These behaviors put riders, drivers and pedestrians at risk - and may result in citations under the ordinance. The above is only a summary of actions that are not allowed when operating an e-bike in Stanton. For a complete list, please refer to § 10.38.030 Unlawful Operation of Motorized Wheeled Conveyance. HELMET AND AGE REQUIREMENTS Riders under 18 must wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet. State law also requires Class 3 e-bike riders to be at least 16 years old, and this applies in Stanton. Young riders should review these requirements with a parent or guardian. While not always required, the City encourages helmet use for all ages because it remains one of the most effective ways to prevent serious injury. DRIVERS PLAY A ROLE, TOO As e-bikes grow in popularity, drivers will encounter them more often. Giving riders space, checking mirrors before turning and slowing down near crosswalks all help prevent avoidable crashes. When drivers remain patient and attentive, riders can travel more safely and the entire community benefits. E-BIKE SAFETY STARTS WITH EVERYONE Whether you’re riding, driving or walking, small choices make a big difference. Staying aware, slowing down, and following the rules all help to ensure safer streets and parks throughout Stanton. QUESTIONS? Residents are invited to submit their questions for an upcoming FAQ through the City’s Instagram and Facebook channels or send an email to [email protected].
