Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Meriwether County; Prepare for Severe Impacts
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Meriwether County, including Greenville, effective immediately until October 10, with urgent calls for residents to prepare for severe winds, moderate flooding, and potential tornadoes.
Meriwether County, including Greenville, is under a Tropical Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Peachtree City, GA, today, October 9, at 5:16 PM EDT. This warning remains in effect until October 10, 2026, at 1:30 AM UTC.
Residents should immediately act to complete preparations before hazardous wind conditions begin. Winds are forecast at 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, with the potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Limited damage to property such as porches, awnings, and unanchored mobile homes is possible, along with broken tree limbs and scattered power outages.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 2-4 inches of rainfall expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate flooding is anticipated, which may necessitate evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and tributaries may overflow, and roads could become impassable.
The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense. Residents in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings; be ready to shelter quickly if a warning is issued. Tornadoes can cause significant damage, power loss, and communications failures.
