Guilford Marina Gets New Sluice Gates After 180 Years
Sound Side Construction installed new sluice gates at Guilford Marina last week, replacing original structures that controlled water flow since 1846.
The East Creek Meadow Owners Association built the original gates to slow rising tides and extend salt hay harvesting hours on the marsh. The Town of Guilford took control in 2003, after salt hay harvesting ended. The gates now slow current in the marina to improve boating safety.
Erosion of the lower half prompted the town to seek a replacement permit in 2019. State authorities approved it in 2025. Marina fees funded the $26,397 project.
Six slips remain available for Guilford residents with boats up to 20 feet. Six river moorings for boats up to 38 feet are open to all boaters. Dockmaster Rod McLennan can provide information at 203-453-8092 or [email protected].
