Verdi EcoSchool Students Gain Life Skills Through 'Growth Levels'

Melbourne’s Verdi EcoSchool implements a program called “Growth Levels” to cultivate personal development in its students. The initiative groups students into mixed-age units that convene twice daily for structured circles focused on intention and reflection.
The Growth Levels program aims to build strong student connections and guide pupils toward mastering personal success skills. These skills align with Verdi EcoSchool’s Learning Framework and fall into six “Big Ideas”: Learn Independently, Navigate Conflict, Lead Teams, Build Networks, Sustain Wellness, and Engage as a Citizen. Students use statements related to these Big Ideas to track their progress and document their learning.
During the morning Intention circle, students set daily goals. The afternoon Reflection circle provides a space to review progress, discuss challenges and celebrate achievements. This daily practice helps students develop skills in planning, perseverance, conflict resolution, teamwork, relationship building, self-care and civic engagement.
Students regularly evaluate their growth using core statements. For instance, under “Learn Independently,” students refer to the statement, “I can develop a plan, monitor my progress, and persevere through challenges to achieve my goal.” Similarly, “Navigate Conflict” is supported by, “I can develop skills, strategies, and emotional awareness while navigating conflicts with others.” The program equips students with personal and social competencies.
